Zionskirche Berlin                                                                                   Zionskirche Berlin
This Church was consecrated on March 2nd, 1873 in the presence of the Emperor.
The congregation was known far beyond the German borders for their commitment against illiberal regimes.
The resistant fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer worked here as a pastor in 1931 and 1932.
Due to the active support to the resistance commune against the GDR-regime the church and its parishioners became more and more target of the state security service. Especially the Environmental Library of the Zion church became well known everywhere.

The synagogue at Rykestraße was built in 1903/1904. At that time it had 2000 seats. Due to its sheltered position in a courtyard, the synagogue came almost undamaged through the night of November 9th in 1938 . In 1940 it was confiscated by the Nazis.  After the Shoa the synagogue became a lively home for the small East-Berlin community. Since the restoration works were finished in 2007, it is the greatest preserved synagogue in Germany (1200 seats) and furthermore a place to pray and room for various events.
Off the religious service times the synagogue is closed.
